Dreaming of sharing your passion for interior design with the world? Looking to add an additional revenue stream to your design business? Or, want to launch a design business but have no experience yet?
So many reasons for starting a design blog and become an interior design blogger!
Starting an interior design blog is a fantastic way to showcase your creativity, connect with others who share your interests, and even make money doing what you love. You’ll get to share ideas, tips, and trends with a growing online community. You can build a successful brand even before you have any design clients. And, you’ll get to build new revenue streams to your business.
Key Takeaways
- Choose a niche to focus your interior design blog.
- Figure our your goals now and in the future.
- Set up your blog on a platform like WordPress.
- Use high-quality visuals to enhance your posts.
The Basics of Interior Design Blogging
Starting an interior design blog can be an exciting venture, but understanding the basics is essential to building a successful platform.
I started my design blog in 2008… That has morphed into several very cool things, businesses, and a whole career in design. And almost 2 decades later, I’m still blogging here at DesignTastemaker.com and our other media brands!
Figure Out Your Why & Vision
Why are you blogging? Are you…
- building awareness for your services or products?
- building new revenue streams?
- building a new hobby?
- building a media company?
What’s your main reason for blogging right now and what does the future look like? What’s your goal?
Your vision will guide the overall direction of your blog. Think about what you want to achieve in the next year or two. Do you aim to become a go-to resource for design advice or perhaps launch your design services? Having a clear vision keeps you focused and motivated.
Did you notice that many today’s famous design professionals and brands have started as bloggers? I remember many of them starting at the same time as I, and they have grown into impressive ventures. But even if you’re just getting started, it’s not too late, by far… in fact: The future trend seems to convert back to blogs. For about a decade, bloggers moved over to fast-pacing social media platforms, but lately, we’ve seen a great return on the long-form content, sharing ideas, and building your own platform.
Intrigued? Let’s move on!
Defining Your Niche and Target Audience
The second step in starting your blog is to identify your target audience. Ask yourself who you want to reach. Are they homeowners, renters, or design professionals? Knowing your target audience helps tailor your content to their interests and needs. Use social media platforms and community groups to understand their preferences better.
Do you already have a niche? Or do you want to have a niche? I think you should.

The Role of a Blogger in the Interior Design Sphere
As an interior design blogger, your role goes beyond just sharing pretty pictures. You are an inspiration to your readers. Your content should educate, inspire, and engage them. Share your expertise, provide useful tips, and offer solutions to common design challenges.
You can also act as a curator, selecting the best products, trends, and ideas to showcase on your blog. Your role involves continuous learning and staying updated with the latest design trends. Collaboration is key, so consider partnering with other bloggers or brands to expand your reach.
Setting Up Your Blogging Schedule
Setting clear goals and a vision for your blog is crucial for long-term success. Your goals should be specific and measurable. For example, aim to publish a certain number of posts each month or grow your social media following by a certain percentage.
Here are typical schedules for blogging, depending on your goal:
- Blogging to grow your service / product business: create 1-2 in-depth articles sharing your expertise each month. This is enough if your goal is to sell your services or products.
- Blogging as an additional revenue stream: this model requires more than 1-2 blogs per month. Aim to launch at least 1 blog each week, and optimize them for search traffic.
- Blogging as a standalone business: this model requires more content creation, I’d recommend 2-4 articles per week. The goal here is to build a complete business out of your blog, and to monetize it through different avenues.
Planning Your Interior Design Blog
Careful planning is essential when starting your interior design blog. This includes picking an engaging blog name and domain, selecting a reliable blogging platform, and considering the costs involved. Let’s dive into these key areas.
Choosing a Compelling Blog Name and Domain
Selecting a blog name is your first big step. It should be catchy, memorable, and reflect your unique design style. Consider including keywords related to interior design for better search engine visibility.
Your domain name should match or closely resemble your blog name to avoid confusion. Use tools like Google Domains or Namecheap to check if your desired domain is available.
A strong name and domain help create a professional brand. But, before you decide, think through whether to use your business domain or a separate blog domain! Or, if you consider to turn your blog into a business one day, maybe not register it with the word “blog” in it.
Blog on the Business Domain vs Separate Domain
If you already have a business, you can use the same domain. But, you could also create a separate domain for your blog, for example Erin Gates’ blog + business:
- Blog: Elements of Style
- Interior Design Business: Erin Gates Design
This could be due to the fact that the Elements of Style blog was born some years (also in 2008) before the service firm domain (2013), AND, the domain name has the word “blog” in it. So, maybe Erin figured it was best to launch the design firm under another name and domain, as a personal brand. I’m just guessing though… (and I love everything Erin does!)
An example of keeping it all under the same brand:
- Studio McGee keeps the blog & services under the same roof (except their shop McGee & Co, which doesn’t have its own blog)
- Note: Shea also blogs about other things than design…
Blog on the Business Domain
Pros:
- SEO Benefits:
- Boosts Domain Authority: The blog contributes to the overall authority of the business website, improving its search engine ranking.
- Increases Traffic: Blog content can drive more traffic to your main website, potentially leading to more business inquiries or sales.
- Internal Linking: Easier to create internal links between blog posts and business pages, enhancing SEO and user experience.
- Brand Consistency: Maintains consistent branding, making it easier for visitors to associate the blog content with your business.
- User Experience:
- Seamless Navigation: Visitors can easily browse between your services and your blog, leading to a more cohesive experience.
- Trust Building: Having all content under one roof can build trust and credibility, as clients see you as an expert directly associated with your services.
- Cost-Efficient:
- Single Hosting Plan: You only need to manage and pay for one hosting plan, which can be more cost-effective.
Cons:
- Site Speed and Performance:
- Potential for Slower Loading: A large volume of blog content might slow down your main business site, especially if not properly optimized.
- Complexity in Management:
- Maintenance: Managing a blog along with your main site can add to the complexity and time required for updates, backups, and security.
- Risk of Dilution:
- Diluted Messaging: If not carefully managed, the blog could overshadow the core business message, making it harder for visitors to focus on your services.
Blog on a Separate Domain
Pros:
- Focused Content Strategy:
- Targeted Branding: Allows you to create a distinct brand identity for the blog, which can cater to a different audience or focus on a niche aspect of interior design.
- Specialized Content: Frees you to explore topics that may not fit neatly under your business brand, potentially reaching a wider or different audience.
- Performance:
- Independent Performance: The blog’s performance doesn’t affect the business site, allowing for faster load times and better optimization for both.
- SEO Opportunities:
- Dual SEO Presence: Possibility of ranking in search engines for both the blog and business site, which can dominate search results.
- Backlinking: Your business site can backlink to the blog (and vice versa), enhancing SEO for both domains.
Cons:
- Branding Challenges:
- Potential Confusion: Having two separate domains may confuse some visitors, leading to unclear brand identity.
- Harder to Build Authority: It takes time to build domain authority from scratch for a new domain, and your efforts may be spread thin between two sites.
- Higher Costs:
- Additional Expenses: You’ll need to pay for a separate domain registration, hosting, and possibly additional resources for maintenance.
- Management Complexity:
- Double the Work: Managing two websites requires more effort, from content creation to updates, SEO, and security.
- Traffic Fragmentation:
- Split Audience: Traffic is divided between the two sites, which could reduce the overall impact on your main business site.
Separate Domain is preferable if you want to target a different audience, experiment with diverse content strategies, or keep the blog distinct for branding or performance reasons.
Same Domain is generally better if you want to strengthen your business’s online presence, improve SEO, and provide a seamless user experience with cohesive branding.
The Importance of a Robust Blogging Platform
Now, let’s talk tech! Choosing the right blogging platform is crucial for your blog’s success. Popular platforms include WordPress, Wix, and Squarespace. Each offers different features, so select one that fits your needs.
- WordPress is highly customizable with many plugins.
- Wix is user-friendly with drag-and-drop functionality.

Ensure the platform supports plugins and SEO tools to help your blog grow. Here’s a quick comparison between the options:

Understanding the Cost and Budget Considerations
Starting a blog involves costs that you must plan for. These include domain registration, web hosting, and platform fees.
- Domain Registration: Around $10-$15 per year.
- Web Hosting: Varies, but basic plans start at $3-$10 per month.
- Blogging Platform Fees: Can range from free (WordPress) for basic plans to $20-$30 per month for premium features.
Also, factor in costs for premium themes, professional logo design, and potential marketing expenses. Creating a budget helps you manage these costs efficiently.
Creating Content for Your Blog
Creating content that is engaging, valuable, and creative is essential for a successful interior design blog. You’ll need a mix of inspiration, a solid content strategy, and the ability to craft posts that captivate your audience.
Cultivating Creativity and Finding Inspiration
Creativity in blogging often starts with inspiration. Look around you, whether it’s home decor magazines, online platforms like Pinterest, or even visiting showrooms.
Keep a journal or use a digital note-taking app to jot down ideas whenever inspiration strikes. Collaborate with other designers and attend industry events to stay current on trends. Don’t forget to explore different styles and cultures as they can offer fresh perspectives.
Developing a Content Strategy
A well-planned content strategy is key to maintaining a successful blog. Start by choosing about 5-7 categories for your blog, such as furniture, colors, and trends. This helps you keep your posts organized and focused.
Use a content calendar to plan posts ahead of time. This will ensure you have a steady flow of content without feeling overwhelmed.
SEO (Search Engine Optimization) is also critical. Use keywords and phrases that your audience might use when searching for interior design topics. Regularly analyze your traffic to see what’s working and adjust your strategy accordingly.
Creating Engaging and Valuable Blog Posts
Your blog posts should be engaging and provide value to your readers. Tips, how-tos, and case studies are some ways to keep your audience interested. Use high-quality images to showcase your designs. They add visual appeal and help explain your points.
Write in a tone that resonates with your readers. A friendly, approachable tone often works best. Don’t just state facts; share your experiences and opinions too.
Encourage interaction by asking questions at the end of your posts and responding to comments. This builds a community around your blog and keeps readers coming back for more.
Tech Setup for a Successful Interior Design Blog
Starting an interior design blog requires a solid tech setup. This involves selecting the right hosting service, creating a visually appealing and functional blog theme, and using various extensions and plugins to enhance your blog’s capabilities.
Choosing the Right Hosting and Content Management System
As mentioned earlier, for reliability and ease of use, WordPress is a top-choice content management system (CMS). You’ll need both a CMS and a hosting service to get your blog online. Opt for a hosting service that offers great uptime, sufficient storage, and good customer support.
Some popular hosting options include:
- Bluehost: Known for its simplicity and strong customer support.
- SiteGround: Offers excellent performance and security (my choice)
- HostGator: Provides affordable plans with reliable uptime.
Each of these hosts supports WordPress, making it easy for you to install and set up your blog.
Designing an Aesthetic and Functional Blog Theme
Your blog’s theme is crucial. It must be both aesthetic and functional to attract and retain readers. A good theme should offer customization options for colors, fonts, and layout to suit your brand. You can find WordPress themes here, or get our customizable web templates!
Make sure your theme is responsive to work well on mobile devices. This ensures that your blog looks great, whether viewed on a phone, tablet, or computer.
Extensions, Plugins, and Tools for Enhancement
To enhance your blog’s features and functionality, include several essential plugins and tools. Plugins like RankMath help optimize your content for search engines. WooCommerce can be valuable if you plan to sell products or services through your blog.
Here are some must-have plugins:
- Elementor: A powerful page builder for creating custom layouts.
- Akismet: Protects your blog from spam comments.
- WP Super Cache: Improves site speed by caching pages.
Additionally, tools like Google Analytics help track your site’s performance and understand your audience better. Using these plugins and tools can significantly improve the user experience and effectiveness of your interior design blog.
Leveraging Visuals and Design Elements
To make your interior design blog stand out, it’s essential to focus on key visual elements. Photography, art, color, light, and texture all play significant roles in creating appealing content. Tailoring design ideas for various spaces ensures your blog resonates with a wide audience.
Incorporating Photography and Art to Showcase Style
High-quality photography is crucial for your blog. Clear and well-lit photos can highlight your design style. Invest in a good camera or hire a professional photographer.
Including artworks in your images adds character. Showcase different styles such as modern, classical, or abstract to appeal to varied tastes.
Display before and after photos to show transformations. These can be compelling and inspire readers to try ideas in their homes.
Share art arrangements and discuss how they complement the overall design. Whether it’s a gallery wall or a standalone piece, art introduces color and personality into a space.
Monetizing Your Interior Design Blog
Now, turning your interior design blog into a source of income can be both exciting and rewarding. You’ll explore ways to earn from ads, affiliate marketing, and even creating exclusive content for loyal readers.
Exploring Diverse Income Streams
Firstly, consider different income streams. Ad revenue is a popular choice; platforms like Google AdSense can display ads on your site and pay you per click. Sponsored posts are another option: brands pay you to write about their products or services.
You can also offer consulting services to readers who need personalized design advice. This can be done through virtual consultations or in-person visits. Don’t forget about selling your own products like e-books, courses, or design templates.
Affiliate Marketing and Product Reviews
Affiliate marketing can be highly profitable. Sign up for programs with companies that align with your blog’s theme. By promoting their products and including affiliate links in your posts, you earn a commission for every sale made through your link.
Writing product reviews can also drive sales. Make sure your reviews are honest and detailed. Your readers value your opinion and are more likely to buy products you genuinely recommend. Always disclose your affiliate relationships to maintain trust.
Premium Content and Membership Models
Offering premium content can attract loyal readers willing to pay for exclusive material. This could be in-depth guides, video tutorials, or downloadable resources. Use platforms like Patreon or set up a membership section on your blog.
Membership models can provide a steady income. Offer different tiers with varying benefits, such as early access to posts or private Q&A sessions. Engaging and providing value to your members increases their loyalty and your income.
Marketing and Growing Your Blog
To grow your interior design blog, focus on improving search engine visibility, leveraging social media, and building an engaged online community. These strategies will help attract more readers and potential clients.
Search Engine Optimization for Higher Visibility
Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is crucial for making your blog visible to a larger audience. Start by using keyword-rich titles and headings that match what your target audience searches for. Tools like Google Keyword Planner can help identify these keywords.
Create high-quality content that answers common questions in your niche. Incorporate keywords naturally throughout your posts, but avoid keyword stuffing, as it can hurt your rankings.
Internal linking is another effective strategy. Link to your own previous posts to keep readers on your site longer, which improves SEO. Don’t forget to optimize your images by using alt text and compressing them for faster load times.
Effectively Using Social Media Platforms
Social media platforms like Instagram, Pinterest, and Facebook are invaluable tools for promoting your blog. Instagram is great for visual content. Share behind-the-scenes looks, tips, and completed projects. Use relevant hashtags to increase your reach.
Pinterest acts as a visual search engine. Pin your blog posts with eye-catching images and engaging descriptions to attract clicks. Join Pinterest groups related to interior design to share your pins with a broader audience.
On Facebook, you can create a dedicated page for your blog. Share your latest posts, run polls, and engage with your followers. Facebook groups offer another opportunity to connect with potential readers by sharing your expertise and blog content.
Building and Engaging Your Online Community
Building an online community takes time and effort but offers great rewards. Start by responding to comments on your blog and social media posts. This makes your readers feel valued and encourages more interaction.
Create an email newsletter to keep your audience updated. Offer exclusive content or early access to your blog posts to make your subscribers feel special. Use an email marketing tool like MailerLite for easy management.

Engage your audience by hosting Q&A sessions, either through blog comments or live sessions on social media. Encourage your followers to share their own design projects and ideas. Feature their contributions on your blog or social media to foster a sense of community.
Building Personal Brand and Networking
Creating a personal brand helps you stand out and gain trust in the interior design community. Networking is essential to connect with other professionals and grow your influence.
Establishing Yourself as an Expert and Influencer
To establish yourself as an expert, start by defining what makes you unique in the field of interior design. Identify your strengths, whether it’s a particular style, a specific type of project, or your approach to client service.
Share your knowledge through blog posts, social media, and webinars. Consistent, high-quality content can position you as a go-to resource. Highlight any certifications or awards you have received to showcase your credibility.
Engaging with your audience through replies and direct messages shows you’re accessible and willing to help.
Networking with Other Design Bloggers and Professionals
Building strong relationships with other interior design bloggers and professionals can open up collaboration opportunities. Attend industry events, whether in-person or virtual, to meet new contacts.
Join online communities and forums where interior designers gather. LinkedIn groups and Facebook communities can be excellent places to share your work and get feedback.
Consider reaching out to bloggers for guest post opportunities or joint projects. These collaborations can increase your reach and enhance your reputation within the design community. Social media platforms like Instagram and Pinterest are also great for networking with other designers by sharing each other’s content.
