In the digital marketing universe, the landing page is the unsung hero designed to convert visitors into customers or to prospective customers. But what exactly is a landing page, and how can you design one that effectively converts? Let’s go through…
- the essentials of landing pages
- practical tips on designing one that achieves your marketing & sales goals
What is a Landing Page?
A landing page is a standalone web page created specifically for marketing, advertising campaigns, or sales. It’s where a visitor “lands” after they click on a link in an email, ads from Google, YouTube, Facebook, Instagram, or similar places on the web.
Unlike regular pages, which typically have many goals and encourage exploration, landing pages are designed with a single focus or goal, known as a call to action (CTA).
The Purpose of Landing Pages
The main purpose of a landing page is to increase conversion rates and help achieve the specific objectives of a campaign. This could be anything from signing up for a newsletter, registering for a webinar, downloading a white paper, or making a purchase.
A well-crafted landing page targets a particular audience, offers them something of value, and captures their contact information, turning visitors into leads, customers & clients (just not all at once)
Key Elements of an Effective Landing Page
- Compelling Headline: The headline is the first thing visitors will see and should clearly state what you are offering in a compelling and succinct way. This is the message that you start with, and hook the person with.
- Persuasive Subheadings: Subheadings should offer a secondary selling point, ideally addressing the visitor’s main concerns or how the offer provides a solution to their problem.
- High-Quality Images or Videos: Visual content can quickly communicate the value of the offer and give visitors a tangible idea of what they’re getting. It’s advisable to add some images, even if you have a business that’s not particularly “visual”. For designers, this won’t be a problem!
- Concise, Value-Oriented Copy: The text should be focused on the benefits of the offer, making it clear why the visitor should care. Use bullet points to break down the benefits or features into easy-to-digest pieces.
- Social Proof: Testimonials, customer logos, or success stories help build trust and validate your offer.
- Authority Builders: In addition to testimonials, you might want to add some logos that your audience recognize and respect, typically logos from media outlets and past partnerships.
- Strong Call to Action: The CTA button should stand out on the page and use action-oriented words. Make it clear what the visitor will get by clicking the button, such as “Get Your Free eBook” or “Register Now”.
Design Tips for a High-Converting Landing Page
- Keep the Design Clean and Uncluttered: Minimize distractions that could detract from your message or CTA. Keep the navigation simple or remove it entirely to keep visitors focused on the task at hand.
- Be Consistent with Branding: The landing page should reflect your brand in terms of colors, fonts, and style to ensure continuity from the ad to the page.
- Optimize for Mobile: With the increasing use of smartphones, ensure your landing page looks good and functions well on mobile devices. In fact, most people likely come to your landing page with a mobile is they come from social platforms, so think about mobile first.
- Speed it Up: Ensure your landing page loads quickly to reduce bounce rates. Compress images and streamline the code to speed up load times.
- Test and Refine: Use A/B testing to try different versions of your page to see what works best. Test different headlines, images, CTAs, and layouts to continuously improve your conversion rates. NOTE: get started with one version and run it for a while before you test new versions.
Also, keep in mind that when testing your hook and overall performance of your landing page, you need to have a sufficient number of visitors to it. If a general conversion rate (i.e. people who sign up for whatever you are offering) is 30%, then you must have enough people to land on your site to determine whether it works. Rule of thumb: test with 1000 visitors and then make a decision about the eventual changes to be made!

Landing Pages as Part of Your Website
Of course, you don’t have to invest in a new tool to build landing pages. You can design a separate page on your website, and decide whether you want to make it visible or hidden. This means that you can either add it to your menu or other parts of the website, or not.
Here’s an example of a simple landing page built in the website (ours!): Tools & Resources for Designers. Notice, there are no menu or footer to distract form the action.
